Maintenance of Process Instrumentation in Nuclear Power Plants, by H.M. Hashemian. This book is written for the instrumentation and control engineers, technicians, and managers in nuclear power plants. It focuses on process temperature and pressure sensors and the verification of these sensors' calibration and response time. It also provides examples of typical problems and solutions with temperature and pressure measurements in nuclear power plants.
The resurgence of the nuclear power industry at a time when the nuclear plant I&C workforce is diminishing due to aging and retirements has been the motivation for writing this book. This book compiles 30 years of practical knowledge gained by the author and his staff in testing the I&C systems of nuclear power plants around the world. It focuses on process temperature and pressure sensors and the verification of these sensors' calibration and response time.
In spite of great advances in electronics, computers, and measurement technologies, important process parameters such as temperature and pressure are still measured with conventional sensing techniques found in RTDs, thermocouples, and conventional pressure and differential pressure sensors. Furthermore, no improved technology providing comparable performance is currently on the horizon. Therefore, it is important to understand how these sensors function and the testing techniques for verifying their performance. This book is intended to help provide this understanding.

Dr. Hashemian’s book, “Sensor Perform ance and Reliability,” was recently translated into the Russian language! The book, originally published in English and available through the International Society of Automation (ISA), is now available in Russian. Topics in the book include recent technological advances in today’s world of instrumentation, and several new instrumentation testing, diagnostics, and analysis techniques to verify the reliability, health, and performance of process instrumentation. The book describes how to objectively assess the accuracy, response time, residual life and other characteristics of installed instrumentation and offers a practical means to identify the problems, assess their consequences, and help resolve th e problems. It provides applications in a number of industries such as power, chemical, aerospace, and others. In-situ methods for sensor response time testing and calibration, on-line measurements to identify blockages and voids in pressure sensing lines, and other examples are covered.
